Muscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy is estimated to affect approximately 1 in every 3,500 newborns. Other muscular diseases have a lower prevalence, for instance Myositis is estimated to affect between 2 and 3 people per 100,000 in the general population. Muscular disorders include muscular dystrophy, myositis, myopathy, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, Becker muscular dystrophy, and Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy.
Osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints. Cartilage is a smooth, rubbery material that cushions the bones and helps them move smoothly against each other. In OA, the cartilage becomes thin and frayed, leading to pain, stiffness, and decreased joint mobility. OA is a chronic condition that progressively worsens over time, although the rate of progression can vary from person to person. There is currently no cure for OA, but treatments are available to manage pain and improve joint function, including physical therapy, weight management, and pain medications. In more severe cases, joint replacement surgery may be necessary.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
RA is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation and damage to the joints. In RA, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues that line the joints, leading to inflammation and swelling. Over time, this can cause permanent damage to the cartilage, bones, and other structures in the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. RA is a chronic, progressive disease that typically worsens over time, although the rate of progression can vary from person to person. There is currently no cure for RA, but early and aggressive treatment can help control inflammation, slow joint damage, and improve quality of life.
Muscular dystrophy (MD)
MD is a group of genetic disorders that cause progressive muscle weakness and wasting. The diseases are caused by mutations in genes that control the production of proteins needed for healthy muscle function. As a result, the muscles gradually become weaker and less able to function normally. There are several different types of muscular dystrophy, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Becker muscular dystrophy, and limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, each with a different pattern of muscle involvement and severity. Some forms of MD are primarily confined to the skeletal muscles, while others can affect the heart and other organs. MD is a progressive disease, meaning that muscle weakness and wasting typically worsen over time.
