How can biotechnologies make a difference on climate change?

Biotechnology companies have a huge role to play in the current climate crisis we are experiencing. Here, we will go over 3 emerging trends that could have a positive impact on the planet.

Biopesticides

To replace chemical pesticides, companies are innovating in biopesticides. It has been proven that chemical pesticides are harmful to the soils and grounds in the long-term so biopesticides seem like a great option. This non-toxic alternative is made from plants, microorganisms, or minerals.

One of the disadvantages of biopesticides is that they are hard to implement as they can take time to be efficient and cost more than regular chemical pesticides.

But companies are working on eliminating those issues and we can hope for a better agricultural management in the next few years!

Cosmetics

For the past years, biotechnologies are more and more common in cosmetics. Customers request the most efficient products and biotech are here to answer this demand. Regarding the impact on climate, the production of cosmetics tends to be harsh on the planet. Using sustainable elements/ingredients thanks to biotechnologies will be a relief from the weigh cosmetics hold on the environment.

Bioplastics

Last but not least, it is no secret that plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental issues of this century. To counterattack, biotechnologies are used to create new alternatives to reduce our plastic outputs.

A few examples: recyclable plastics that will biodegrade fast and without leaving microplastics behind. There are also microbial enzymes to eliminate plastics that are already in use in most households.

Do you need biological resources for your research project, or a biobank to host your biological collections?
