Mass spectrometry allows for the quantitative analysis of the lipid composition of a cell, tissue, or organism.
Lipids are extracted from the sample and infused directly into the mass spectrometer, where they are identified with the help of dedicated software based on their molecular mass.
The inclusion of internal lipid-based standards allows for absolute quantification, yielding pmol values for each molecule. Additionally, fragmentation of the lipids provides structural information, for example on the exact fatty acid composition of a particular lipid molecule.
