Mass Spectrometry is an analytical chemistry technique that allows the quantification of proteins in a sample.
Quantification can be absolute, using internal isotopic standards for targeted analyses only, or relative, with isotopic labelling such as SILAC, TMT or iTRAQ, or without labelling using the label-free technique.
The services currently available offer relative quantification with label-free or labelled techniques. The performances of these two types of methods are equivalent.
The SILAC approach is more robust because it limits experimental variability. It should be noted that it applies to cultured cells only and requires a large number of passages to ensure a high rate of isotope incorporation into proteins.
